Enjoy a fun packed week-end learning the absorbing art of hand spinning. Start out learning about fleece selection, purchase and preparation. Move on to carding on a drum carder and then start to spin on drop spindle. Having mastered drafting on the drop spindle progress to a wheel. Look at setting up a wheel and the principles of tension. Turn your prepared batts into spun singles. Learn the principles behind plying. Create and finish your own skein of hand spun fibre. All materials and use of equipment included. Two day course. 9 hours tuition. 10 am to 4 pm Saturday and 10 am to 3.00 pm Sunday. Maximum 3 people. Rural location. Use of a car essential.

Basic Beginner’s Course in Hand Spinning (9:30 - 4:30) £95.00
Everything you need to know to get started with hand spinning. From initial choice of fibres to the finished skein this course covers all essential aspects of hand spinning. Start on a drop spindle and progress to a wheel. Go home with your own hand spun skein. All materials and use of equipment included. Maximum 3 people. One day. 9:30 - 4:30. Rural location. Use of a car essential.
Fibre Preparation for Hand Spinners (10:00 - 3:00) £60.00
For those who know how to spin but need help to process a raw fleece to something spinable. Especially helpful for small-holders who aim to process quantities of fleece. This one day workshop covers raw fleece selection, skirting and grading, hot washing, cold washing, picking, and carding using a drum carder (NOT hand carders). Students have an opportunity to discover all the latest equipment including a picker, an electric drum carder, and a manual drum carder. The workshop runs from 10am – 3pm with a break for lunch. Bring your own fleece, a couple of large old towels and a packed lunch. Rural location. Use of a car essential.
Warp up and Weave: Two Day Beginner’s Introduction to Weaving on a Rigid Heddle Loom £195.00
Two-day course for beginner weavers based on Kromski and Ashford rigid heddle looms. Most weaving courses assume you can already warp your loom, or, in order to save time, the tutor does it for you in advance. This course is for those who have a rigid heddle loom but can’t fathom how to warp it up and get weaving. During the course you will learn how to plan your project, work out how much yarn you are going to need, make decisions about yarn weight and heddle size, warp your own loom and finally get into the joy of weaving. Bring your own Rigid Heddle Table Loom and choice of yarns. Please discuss your yarn choice with the tutor in advance.

One to one tuition for nervous beginners and those who can already spin or are self taught and want to work on specific aspects of technique. The fee is £55.00 for two hours. Bring your own wheel or use one of mine. Fibre charged at cost or bring your own. Sort out your glitches. Spin outside you comfort zone. Dates to suit. Rural location. Use of a car essential.

The spinning courses require a certain level of dexterity in the hands and feet. Please let me know in advance if you have any concerns.
Terms and Conditions of Booking
Payment for a workshop is due in full at time of booking.
Any cancellation by the client must be made in writing. In the event of cancellation, we will refund a percentage of the total workshop price. This amount will depend on the days of notice prior to the actual workshop date and are as follows:-
Full refund given 8 weeks before course date
50% refund 4 weeks before course date
No refund under 4 weeks before course date
We will confirm our acceptance of your booking in writing (by email) on receipt of your payment; our confirmation activates the contract between us.
Cartmel Handspun reserves the right to alter or cancel any workshop. Should an alteration or cancellation become necessary, you will have the choice of accepting the change, taking an alternative workshop (and where this is of a lower price we will refund the difference), or withdrawing from the contract and accepting a refund.
If we have to cancel the workshop due to under-booking, which is the situation where the minimum number of bookings required to run a workshop is not met, we will not do so less than three days prior to the workshop. (Please take this into consideration when booking your accommodation.)
In the event of unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, such as disease, fire, flood or adverse weather conditions, we reserve the right to cancel the workshop up to and including the start date.
In the event of the specified tutor being unable to attend due to illness or other circumstances beyond our control, another tutor will be provided. If this is not possible, then the workshop will be rescheduled and the provisions of clause 5 will come into effect.
We reserve the right to change any of the prices, service or other particulars contained on our website, external websites or brochures at any time before we enter into contract with you. If there is any change, we will notify you before we enter into such contract.
The types of workshop we offer require flexibility and must allow for alternatives. For this reason the outline itinerary and workshop description must be taken as an indication of what may actually take place on the workshop, and not as a contractual obligation on the part of Cartmel Handspun.
By reserving a place on the workshop with your payment, you are agreeing to accept all the above conditions. The person who makes the booking does so on, behalf of all the individuals included, and all are bound by the booking conditions.
