From Fleece to Fibre: Two Day Beginner’s Course in Hand Spinning £165.00
Enjoy a fun packed week-end learning the absorbing art of hand spinning. Start out learning about fleece selection, purchase and preparation. Move on to carding on a drum carder and then start to spin on drop spindle. Having mastered drafting on the drop spindle progress to a wheel. Look at setting up a wheel and the principles of tension. Turn your prepared batts into spun singles. Learn the principles behind plying. Create and finish your own skein of hand spun fibre. All materials and use of equipment included. Two day course. 9 hours tuition. 10 am to 4 pm Saturday and 10 am to 3.00 pm Sunday. Maximum 4 people. Rural location. Use of a car essential.

Hand Spinning Essentials - Residential week-end (half board) £495.00
Combine a holiday in the Lake District National Park with an in depth week-end learning the ancient art of hand spinning.
Start out in our fleece store to learn about fleece selection, grading, purchase and preparation. Move on to carding on a drum carder, and then start to spin on drop spindle. Having mastered drafting on the drop spindle progress to a wheel. Learn to set up any type of wheel. Explore fibre design and how to create the fibre you actually want. Master the principles of tension. Learn to establish a balanced ply. Create and finish your own skeins of hand spun fibre. Experiment with different fibres. Small group of up to four to ensure high level of one-to-one tuition. Tutor Elaine Ware brings many years of experience in hand spinning, an in-depth knowledge of the subject and an international reputation for tutoring excellence.
Includes 12.5 hours tuition to give you everything you need to know to turn a raw fleece into finished yarn. Course runs from 16:30 on the Friday to 12 noon on the Monday. Use of all equipment, a range of modern and traditional wheels are provided. All materials – a wide range of fibres to try out. Your own finished work to take home. Maximum 4 people.
Stay in our 17th century traditional farmhouse on a former country estate in the English Lake District National Park. The spacious house features oak beams, wood-burning stove, two foot thick walls, and bags of historic character

Basic Beginner’s Course in Hand Spinning (9:30 - 4:30) £90.00
Everything you need to know to get started with hand spinning. From initial choice of fibres to the finished skein this course covers all essential aspects of hand spinning. Start on a drop spindle and progress to a wheel. Go home with your own hand spun skein. All materials and use of equipment included. Maximum 3 people. One day. 9:30 - 4:30. Rural location. Use of a car essential.
Fibre Preparation for Hand Spinners (10:00 - 3:00) £50.00
For those who know how to spin but need help to process a raw fleece to something spinable. Especially helpful for small-holders who aim to process quantities of fleece. This one day workshop covers raw fleece selection, skirting and grading, hot washing, cold washing, picking, and carding using a drum carder (NOT hand carders). Students have an opportunity to use all the latest equipment including a picker, an electric drum carder, and a manual drum carder. The workshop runs from 10am – 3pm with a break for lunch. Bring your own fleece, a couple of large old towels and a packed lunch. Rural location. Use of a car essential.
One to one tuition for nervous beginners and those who can already spin or are self taught and want to work on specific aspects of technique. The fee is £40.00 for two hours. Bring your own wheel or use one of mine. Fibre charged at cost or bring your own. Sort out your glitches. Spin outside you comfort zone. Dates to suit. Rural location. Use of a car essential.

Following the Government’s very recent advice that persons over the age of 70 and those with an existing condition which would make them especially vulnerable to the Corona Virus, should self isolate, I have no alternative but to postpone all courses booked up to mid-June.

Lunches & Refreshments
Coffee and a choice of teas are provided throughout the day. On most courses you will be invited to share in our family lunch of home-made vegetarian soup, artisan bread, a selection of cheeses and fruit in season. NOT on the Fibre Prep course. Do feel free to bring your own packed lunch if you would prefer or have special dietary needs.
The spinning courses require a certain level of dexterity in the hands and feet. Please let me know in advance if you have any concerns.
