From Fleece to Fibre: Two Day Beginner’s Course in Hand Spinning  £195.00

Enjoy a fun packed week-end learning the absorbing art of hand spinning. Start out  learning about fleece selection, purchase and preparation. Grade and wash a locally produced fleece. Move on to carding on a drum carder and then start to spin on drop spindle. Having mastered drafting on the drop spindle progress to a wheel. Look at setting up a wheel and the principles of tension. Turn your prepared fibre into spun singles. Learn the principles behind plying. Create and finish your own skein of hand spun fibre. All materials and use of equipment included. Two day course.  10am to 4pm Saturday and 10 am to 3.00 pm Sunday. Small group. Rural location. Use of a car essential.

One Day Hand Spinning for Beginners   £105.00

Hands-on practical one-day spinning course in the Lake District National Park. Covers all basic aspects, including fibre selection and preparation. By the end of the day you will have a working knowledge of the all the techniques necessary to go away and start spinning your own yarn. 

The course covers:
•    Fibre selection and types of preparation. Exploring all sorts of fleeces to find what's best for your needs
•    Techniques for drafting using a drop spindle
•    Spinning on a wheel  - hands on experience
•    Plying – making a 2 ply yarn
•    The Niddy Noddy, skein making and finishing
•    Setting up your wheel 
•    Further resources, what to do next

Courses can be adapted to suit the individual level of ability and experience. Small groups of up to four people. Course dates available throughout the year. Fleece Preparation for Workshop £89.00

For those who want to learn how to add value to raw fleece. Especially helpful for farmers and small-holders and those who aim to hand process their own fleece either for personal use or to sell on. This one day workshop covers raw fleece selection, skirting and grading, hot washing, cold washing, picking, and carding using a drum carder (NOT hand carders). Students have an opportunity to work on high end equipment including a heavy duty picker, and an electric jumbo drum carder. The workshop runs from 10am – 3pm with a break for lunch. Bring your own fleece, a couple of large old towels and a packed lunch. Rural location. Use of a car essential.  Up to three persons max. On request. Please contact to book.

Terms and Conditions of Booking

Payment for a workshop is due in full at time of booking.

 

To claim a refund any cancellation by the client must be made in writing. We can no longer make an exception for Covid related absence.  In the event of cancellation, we will refund a percentage of the total workshop price. This amount will depend on the days of notice prior to the actual workshop date and are as follows:-

 

       Full refund given 8 weeks before course date

       50% refund 4 weeks before course date

      No refund under 4 weeks before course date

 

We will confirm our acceptance of your booking in writing (by email) on receipt of your payment; our confirmation activates the contract between us.

 

Cartmel Handspun reserves the right to alter or cancel any workshop. Should an alteration or cancellation become necessary, you will have the choice of accepting the change, taking an alternative workshop (and where this is of a lower price we will refund the difference), or withdrawing from the contract and accepting a refund.

 

If we have to cancel the workshop due to under-booking, which is the situation where the minimum number of bookings required to run a workshop is not met, we will not do so less than three days prior to the workshop. (Please take this into consideration when booking your accommodation.)

 

In the event of unforeseeable circumstances beyond our control, such as disease, fire, flood or adverse weather conditions, we reserve the right to cancel the workshop up to and including the start date.

 

In the event of the specified tutor being unable to attend due to illness or other circumstances beyond our control, another tutor will be provided. If this is not possible, then the workshop will be rescheduled and the provisions of clause 5 will come into effect.

 

We reserve the right to change any of the prices, service or other particulars contained on our website, external websites or brochures at any time before we enter into contract with you. If there is any change, we will notify you before we enter into such contract.

 

The types of workshop we offer require flexibility and must allow for alternatives. For this reason the outline itinerary and workshop description must be taken as an indication of what may actually take place on the workshop, and not as a contractual obligation on the part of Cartmel Handspun.

The workshop are designed at a level appropriate for persons over the age of sixteen. The tutor(s) are not qualified or insured for teaching children under 16.

 

By reserving a place on the workshop with your payment, you are agreeing to accept all the above conditions. The person who makes the booking does so on, behalf of all the individuals included, and all are bound by the booking conditions.
